A pair of Gentoo Penguins (Pygoscelis papua) mating on Petermann Island. The nest is a pile of pebbles - a valuable commodity that the penguins steal from one another. The penguins nest in breeding colonies when the snow melts and exposes the mud and pebbles. The colonies are dirty, noisy and smelly. Petermann Island, Antarctica, 23 November 2013.
