While Antarctica is usually thought of as pristine white, when large numbers of penguins congregate in breeding colonies the environment becomes filthy with mud and penguin droppings. This is starting to happen in this image of Cuverville Island early in the breeding season at this Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua) colony.
